Website uses Facial Recognition Technology to Find Lost Pets

April 9, 2015 in Aerowood Animal Hospital

FindingRover.com is a website and smart phone app that uses facial recognition technology to help return lost dogs to their owners. Pet owners can take a front-facing picture of their pet and upload it to the website. The photo needs to include a clear view of the eyes and nose, which are the two most important features of facial recognition technology.

Anyone who finds a missing pet is encouraged to take a photo and upload it to the website’s database where it is then scanned to see if there is a match. Matches generate a notice to the pet owner who can then contact the finder and reunite with their pup.

The founder of FindingRover.com, John Polimeno, is traveling around the U.S. and other countries to educate veterinarians, animal shelters, and rescue groups about the technology and encourage its use. Sign-up is free and the app is available for iPhones and Androids.
