The Best Dog Breeds for People with Allergies

The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology estimates that 10 percent of Americans suffer from allergies to animals. Usually, the allergic response is triggered by skin dander that collects on the animal’s coat. The good news is there are several dog breeds that are considered hypoallergenic, which means they have less chance of causing an allergic reaction to sensitive individuals. The American Kennel Club (AKC) suggests these nine breeds for allergy sufferers.

  1. Bedlington Terrier
  2. Bichon Frise
  3. Chinese Crested
  4. Kerry Blue Terrier
  5. Maltese
  6. Poodle (Standard, Minature, and Toy)
  7. Portuguese Water Dog
  8. Schnauzer (Standard and Minature)
  9. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

All of these breeds shed little to no hair and therefore produce less dander making them great choices for people who have allergies but want a pet.
