Remember to Cut Plastic Rings

September 18, 2013 in Aerowood Animal Hospital

Strangled birds, small sea mammals with amputated limbs and this. Older reports estimate hundreds of thousands of animals injured or killed annually due to getting trapped in six-pack rings (technically known as yokes). Even if you live far from a body of water, even if you plan to recycle, please cut these rings before throwing them away. This will prevent them from becoming animal traps.

The turtle pictured here was transported to a zoo in St. Louis. There the plastic yoke was removed, and they named her Peanut. The damage to her shell is permanent, but Peanut is expected to live a long life as a mascot for littering awareness.
