Dog Training Tip: Sit Means Stay

May 9, 2014 in Aerowood Animal Hospital

When training your dog to sit on command, do not reinforce the sit command with a stay command. Sit needs to mean “sit and don’t move until I release you.” This also means don’t reinforce the sit command with the “stop” hand gesture. When training, it’s all good fun, but one day, you will be out with your dog and very glad that your dog responds crisply and reliably to one quick “sit” command.
