10 Intelligent Dog Breeds

While all dog breeds are clever and unique in their own way, here is the AKC’s list of 10 intelligent dog breeds when it comes to the jobs they do.

1. Border Collie- This breed is known for their intelligence, instinct, and work ability. They are also very agile making them a perfect fit for a sheep or cattle dog.

2. German Shepherd- Being smart, loyal, and dependable makes German Shepherds great as a police, military, or guard dog.

3. Bloodhound- Bloodhounds have great scenting abilities and are the best at trailing. They excel at search and rescue and also make good police dogs. Their trailing results are even admissible in court.

4. Beagle- Beagles have good noses which makes them shine at detection work.

5. Labrador Retriever- Labs are the perfect guide dogs because they are highly trainable and eager to please. This is also probably why they are the most popular pet according to the AKC.

6. Newfoundland- This easily trained breed had a large lung capacity and has mastered long-distance swimming. Combine this with their lifesaving instincts and Newfoundland’s are superior at water rescue.

7. Belgian Malinois- These dogs are commonly used in the military because not only are they smart, but agile, highly trainable, confident, and protective.

8. Siberian Huskies- Because of their incredible endurance and willingness to work, Siberian Huskies make great sled dogs.

9. Golden Retriever- With their instinctive work ability, intelligence, and eager to please attitude, Golden Retriever’s are excellent assistance dogs.

10. Australian Shepherds- These dogs are wonderful herders because of their superior herding instincts. They are also adaptable, energetic, and live for their job.
